A Prime Location

Trafford Wharfside is a key part of Trafford located within the Manchester Regional Centre on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal and opposite Salford Quays. The development of this area has been a priority for a long time. Its strategic location across the Manchester Ship Canal provides an opportunity that can act as a catalyst for further regeneration of the surrounding areas.

The Trafford Wharfside area holds the southern extent of MediaCity, which is an international hub for digital and creative industries and home to large business names such as BBC and ITV. It is also a gateway to Trafford Park, Europe’s largest industrial park. Trafford Wharfside offers the opportunity for further employment, residential and mixed-use schemes. Taking advantage of its location close to MediaCity, Old Trafford Stadium, and the attractive waterfront.

Trafford Wharfside is a well-connected area, with connections by the Metrolink, and key road and rail routes running through Greater Manchester. This makes it an attractive area for businesses as travel will be made simple for working professionals. The Wharfside area is also a popular route for both walkers and cyclists, offering beautiful views of the canal and surrounding scenery.

The Master Plan: Creating A World-Class

Waterside Neighbourhood

The project covers over 45 hectares of the city centre and is a prime example of what is possible when a logical plan is created and followed. Chapel Wharf is a holistic plan that will help boost economic growth and develop a true community. Furthermore, the plans in place promise to enhance and protect the local cultural and architectural heritage and ecological assets that the area benefits from.

The reactivation of forgotten railway arches, new walking and cycling routes, a more diverse selection of homes and a new accessible, high-quality waterside environment, will combine to bring Chapel Wharf closer to the council’s aim; ‘to create a place where people want to live, work and spend quality time by delivering more accessible, sustainable and attractive developments’.

The masterplan divides Trafford Wharfside into 5 distinct zones; Heritage Quater; Trafford Wharf; Wharfside Heart; and Innovation Quater. Each zone is decided by the different scales, characters and uses proposed. The scheme aims for each zone to work in collaboration to develop a comprehensive masterplan anchored into Trafford.

Heritage Quarter

The Heritage Quarter is the east end of the area being regenerated. It is located opposite the Trafford Wharf, with the Manchester Ship Canal running along the north side of the zone. The site is enclosed by Sir Alex Ferguson Way, Wharfside Way and Trafford Road, which also holds the Bridgewater Canal which will travel down the south of the site.

The Victoria Warehouse and the Telephone Exchange, are some of the several buildings with significant architectural character and heritage. These buildings will remain in place to keep the heritage in the area. This area is set to be a mixed residential area, combining commercial and residential buildings and holding a large car park. There is also potential to create improved access and activity to the Bridgewater Canal across Victoria Quay with a new improved public realm.

Trafford Wharf

Trafford Wharf is the north area of the site bordering the Manchester Ship Canal and located north of Trafford Wharf Road. The site represents the edge of Trafford Borough and overlooks Salford across the river. It also offers amazing views of Media City UK and Salford Quays. This is a perfect location for any professional workers in the nearby area.

This section of the project is the largest and is going to hold a mixture of high-rise residential and commercial buildings creating a multi-use area of the project. The area will be along a public street along the canal, making the route a more scenic and impressive area.

Wharfside Heart

The Wharfside Heart is the area to the core of the development, bordering each of the other areas, and connecting the site as a whole. This site will provide a public realm including green spaces and children’s play areas. The majority of this section will be residential. However, within the housing, there will be further commercial amenities to ensure this is a mixed-use space.

There is an area allocated for the potential of a new primary school and for a car park to meet the needs of visitors/residents of the site. Also, a large green space will run through the area, from east to west. Providing residents with a place to walk and enjoy greenery and to ensure this is recognised green development.

Innovation Quarter

The Innovation Quarter is the western area of the Trafford Wharfside master plan, with Warren Bruce Road and Europa Way on the west side of the zone. The Innovation Quarter and the Bridgewater Neighbourhood are separated by John Gilbert Way, which is to the south of the area. This section of the project is all commercial spaces, providing space for more business opportunities.

In between these commercial developments, there will be  public open spaces to ensure greenery is restored throughout the project. Also, Wharfside Way runs through the site from east to west, providing key access for industrial services.
